Although it is commonly believed that liposuction is a weight loss technique, this is not true. Liposuction involves reshaping your body but cannot prevent you from gaining weight after the treatment. Although fat will be distributed more evenly through the body after liposuction, rapid weight gain can cause your body to collect fat in the treatment area.
Weight Gain Immediately after Liposuction
Some people experience some weight gain immediately after their treatment. Some people find this extremely irritating, as they do not understand that the principle of liposuction is not to lose weight, but to have a better body shape. It is believed that the weight gain after liposuction is caused by the fluid inserted into the treatment area, and the fluid that the body produces causing swelling.
Weight Gain after Liposuction Recovery
If you gain a lot of weight after recovering from liposuction, it is likely that this is because you have failed to change your eating habits and lifestyle choices, or you have changed your habits for the worse. Some people have the wrong attitude after liposuction believing that they cannot gain weight or that they can gain weight and have repeat procedures. This is not the correct mentality to have. Although repeat procedures are possible they make the surgery, more complicated meaning that there is a higher risk of complications developing. Liposuction should not be used as an alternative to losing weight through diet and exercise. Anyone who believes that this is the case will be disappointed as without making changes to your eating and exercise habits you will gain weight rapidly and your body will revert back to its pre- surgery state.
What to Do if You Begin to Gain Weight after Liposuction
If you notice that you have started to gain weight after having liposuction, you should immediately try to stop this process to prevent you from gaining fat. Gaining a small amount of weight will not cause any problems but if you continue to gain weight, the effects of your surgery are likely to be reversed. You should try to highlight the factors that are causing you to gain weight, such as a lack of physical activity or a diet that is high in fat, salt, sugar, and calories. Once you understand why you are putting on weight, it will be easier to change the habits that are causing it. Preventing weight gain could be as simple as cutting down portion sizes, or switching full fat foods for lower fat alternatives. This means that you can change your eating habits without a dramatic change to your overall diet. It may mean becoming more active. If this is the case, you should start off slowly gently building up the amount of physical activity that you do each week. You should try to do at least half an hour of exercise five times a week. This can involve swimming, jogging, gym membership, and sports.
Unexplained Weight Gain
If you have a healthy diet and are physically active, but are, still putting on weight after liposuction you should see your GP. It is possible that your weight gain is caused by a hormonal deficiency, or that it is caused by some medication that you are taking. Your GP will be able to advise you on what you can do to limit the amount of weight that you put on.
